By cutting up the paragraphs and physically seeing how they were not coherent, I was able to structure them in a manner that would make sense to the intended audience. I don't think I would have ever been able to understand her ink marks and suggestions without visually seeing my mistakes and learning how to order my thoughts.

I used this technique throughout the remainder of undergraduate career. As I progressed academically, I was able to have more control over my thought process and writing method.

AUDITORY

I relay on my hearing almost just as much as what I see visually. I need to have noise in my immediate surroundings whenever I am working on something, studying, and believe or not even while reading.

During my time as an undergraduate, I dreaded going to the library for group work and always suggested other places that were not so quiet. I am the type of student who needs at least music playing or some type of noise like in a park or coffee shop (the distractions from "people watching" helps too).

Rarely do I finish tasks in complete silence. I have even found that certain songs can even trigger my memories to recall information that I have read or saw briefly.

Learning Experiences

In my English Composition course during my freshman year at Auburn University, I had a hard time pleasing my professor (or so I thought) with my writng. I have always loved to write and I can express myself quite well by doing so. However, every time I turned in a paper she would chop it up and make all those red marks that every student dreads.

One day at a routinely scheduled student-teacher conference, she explained to me in detail why she "inked" my papers up so much. She expressed that I was not clearly understanding her suggestions.

So she took my 10 page paper and cut it up by paragraphs. We both got on the floor and laid the paragraphs out according to related themes in relation to the topic of the paper. She explained to me that I was a good writer and my thoughts were relevant but usually all over the place! Ah-ha!
